33 Photos of Fun and Festivities With San Francisco’s Transgender District
In August 1966, Compton's Cafeteria was open all night, affordable, and one of the few spaces in the city where transgender women and drag queens could sit down at 3 a.m. safely and in peace. However, management gradually grew frustrated with their presence and called the police.
What happened next spilled out onto the street and, three years before Stonewall, became one of the earliest acts of trans resistance in U.S. history.
This year marks 60 years of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot. And at the Transgender District, the world's first legally recognized transgender district, they center the legacy and impact of the moment on August 27th and 28th. On Thursday the 27th, the District joins forces with Opera Parallèle for the fifth annual Expansive Showcase, a showcase of trans and nonbinary classical artists, featuring RuPaul Drag Race alum Sapphira Cristál, Katherine Goforth, and Nina Jones, with host Afrika America and pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi. This year's theme honors the 60th anniversary of the Compton's Cafeteria Riots. "This milestone invites us to reflect on the courage, resilience, and leadership of San Francisco's trans community, making this year's Expansive especially meaningful," says Daniel Harvey, Opera Parallèle's Executive Director. "Through this collaboration, Opera Parallèle is proud to help create a space where community, artistry, joy, and reflection come together in celebration of the legacy of Compton's Cafeteria and the generations of trans people who have shaped San Francisco's history."
On Friday, August 28th, the all-Black drag spectacular Reparations, along with the Transgender District and SF Black Pride, continue the celebrations in Reparations is a Riot! Hosted by Nicki Jizz and also featuring Sapphira Cristál among other talent, the night will feature drag artists, DJs, aerial performances, and unabashed trans joy. "Despite unequal access to opportunity and resources, Black and Brown trans and nonbinary people have continued to shape the arts scene, and the classical music industry with or without formal educational training," says Breonna McCree, Co-Executive Director of the Transgender District. "Our cultural legacy has always been part of that narrative, and Expansive gives us the chance to spotlight incredible trans and nonbinary artists who are shining through sheer, exceptional talent! We're proud to have a platform that brings our community's stories and voices forward."
